Queer Cornerstones

Curated by the AIA Austin LGBTQIA+ Alliance, Queer Cornerstones is a tribute to the vibrant yet transient nature of queer spaces in Austin, capturing sites from two distinct bike tours led by the Alliance. This tour explores important landmarks in Austin’s queer uprising, cherished cultural hubs, and places designed by queer architects, honoring the legacy of spaces we have lost and those still at risk.

Born amidst the potential razing of Austin’s small but mighty Fourth Street “Gayborhood,” the tour emphasizes the power and importance of visible queer spaces. Their stories both enrich our connection to the city and embed our livelihoods into the urban landscape. Markers of representation for marginalized communities are important for sustained visibility and longevity. Given Austin’s historically scattered scene of queer spaces, we hope to raise awareness for proactive queer preservation during a time when queer rights are constantly under attack.

Narratives for this tour were written by Robbie Anderson; Mikel Bennett, AIA; Sarah Biesterveld, AIA; Joe D’Elia, AIA; Tim Petersen; Marta Stefaniuk; John Stenzel; and May Wong. Additional editorial and coordination were provided by Bud Franck, AIA; Darwin Harrison, AIA; and Courtney Mallen, Assoc. AIA. Photography was provided by Bud Franck, with additional images contributed by Casey Dunn and Austin History Center.

The axonometric drawings included in several places are courtesy Robbie Anderson and John Stenzel as part of their original research. The drawings provide additional documentation of siting and massing, while also serving as poignant illustrations of their significance to the community.

The LGBTQIA+ Alliance aims to create a space for our members to start conversations, build community, and foster diversity and inclusion within our profession and organization.
